3 Master Herbs for Creativity and Self-expression

“Everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence.” ~ Mourning Dove

Creativity underlies every individual’s pursuit of individual authenticity and legacy. But many of us feel physically and emotionally depleted to create, or we wake up regularly without feeling that “creative spark” in our lives.

Fortunately, there are things we can do that can help our bodies become more receptive to creative energies, and herbs are a part of that routine upgrade. You can take the following three herbs for creativity as a daily tea, a tincture, or sprinkled dried in a smoothie or a salad.

By consuming herbs that stimulate the creative energy centers – primarily our sacral and solar plexus chakras – we can more readily connect with our intuition, authenticity, and courage.

Why We Lose Creative Energy and Signs of Sacral Chakra Imbalance

When other energy centers are overactive, the body funnels all the supplies it has to keep them going. For example, if our head is dictating our experience, a lot of mental energy will be used to keep the mind active. But since we have a limited energy supply that we get from foods, herbs, and emotions, certain energy centers may become “depleted” due to our lifestyle. This could mean that a few chakra energy centers are overactive, at the expense of others that become underactive, which can cause physical, emotional, and spiritual excesses or deficiencies in our lives.

When our creative energy center – or the sacral chakra – becomes depleted, overactive, or blocked, there are major symptoms that arise, such as:

  • Jealousy
  • Inability to feel pleasure or joy
  • Lack of healthy boundaries
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Workaholic tendencies
  • Deliberate risk-taking
  • Lack of purpose
  • Ceasing menstruation for long periods
  • Overspending
  • Addiction to drama and entertainment for escapism
  • Emotional outbursts or withdrawal
  • Inability to engage in intimacy

To bring homeostasis to our creative energy imbalances, it is vital to strengthen the function of the sacral chakra – which is tied to the reproductive organs and the kidneys. As procreation is a form of creativity, the state of our reproductive organs is very indicative of our relationship with creativity and the role it has in our lives.

If you suffer from uterine fibroids, prostate problems, menstrual issues, or vaginal infections and cannot point to any physical reasons as to why, chances are that the creative energy center is imbalanced; but fret not – with proper foods, herbs, lifestyle choices, and creative expression, you can bring flow and vitality to your sacral chakra and experience passion, prosperity, self-esteem, and greater connection to your creative process.

In her Anatomy of the Spirit, Caroline Myss, an intuitive medical medium, writes that fibroids are a common symptom of sacral chakra blockages. Since survival is the major issue of the sacral chakra, not feeling safe in life to authentically thrive is one big blockage to creative expression. She further states that fibroids are often the result of creative energy that is not yet birthed and which is directed into unfulfilling jobs and relationships.

The Sacral Chakra – Our Creative Energy Center

The sacral chakra governs our emotions, sexuality, creativity/self-expression, and pleasure.

In the Vedic tradition, the sacral chakra is represented by the color orange, and it is suggested that to strengthen that energy point, wearing clothes and consuming foods that are orange is highly beneficial. The same goes for herbs! Most herbs that are orange in color are very nourishing and balancing to the sacral chakra. And when it comes to fruit, oranges, papayas, and mangoes are tremendously beneficial for boosting the health of the sacral chakra organs and energy flow.

But did you know that engaging in sacred chakra activities can also rebalance this area of the body and help you become more creative? Some of those activities include feeling high vibrational emotions, enjoying small pleasures in life that elevate your sense of well-being, expressing love and pleasure through sexuality, and engaging in anything creative that takes you out of your mind and into the present moment. Yes, you heard right – a creative mindset is an antidote to feeling stuck creatively!

What this means is simply that it is important to make space for any form of self-expression that comes up without judgment and perfectionism. Once we permit ourselves to create as children do, we can truly feel the healing joy of creativity and reestablish our connection to our authentic self-expression.

The Top 3 Herbs for Creativity

Herbs have been used as medicine by our ancestors throughout cultures, and healing cells and tissues with herbs are still the fundamental tenants of naturopathy. Ancient healers understood that all is energy and that plants possess the consciousness that is meant to elevate our cells and bring them to their original state of balance. Their chemical composition has either astringent (detoxifying), toning, or cooling qualities that alchemize with the body’s chemistry to bring cells, tissues, and glands to their optimal function.

The following herbs are some of the strongest for revitalizing the reproductive system and strengthening the function of the sacral chakra. I recommend having calendula, raspberry leaf, and damiana leaf as morning tea, but if you’re looking for greater potency, a dropper-full of an herbal tincture in the morning or afternoon is ideal (however, go easy with damiana, since it is known to produce a natural high in larger quantities; I recommend a third of a dropper).

Calendula

Calendula is known to be a panacea herb that treats many conditions. It is highly anti-inflammatory and is a strong lymphatic system mover that detoxifies acids and instigates energy flow in the reproductive system. Calendula flowers are also very potent in healing kidney disease and are excellent for skin detoxification.

Damiana

Damiana is an aphrodisiac and a catalyst for love and passion. It is known to improve erectile dysfunction, sexual impotency, vaginal health, and low sex drive. Known as an antidepressant, it is also a potent herb for stress relief and nervous system relaxation.

Raspberry Leaf

Raspberry leaf is the quintessential men’s and women’s reproductive tonic that cleans and regenerates the uterus and prostate by detoxifying excess estrogen and balancing hormones. It is also a wonderful herb for increasing fertility and lowering menstrual pain.

How to Find the Best Quality Herbs

When it comes to herbs, my sound advice is to always go certified organic and to research the harvest source, if possible. Since most herbs can be outsourced from bulk factories that use chemicals to cheaply process or “artificially upgrade” herbs, the organic label will ensure that no pesticides or chemicals are used in the growth, harvest, or production of herbs. The last thing you would want is to consume denatured herbs along with toxins!

As many distributors know that consumers are becoming more aware of adulterated products, and many, in order to make profit with a sub-par products, claim that their herbs are “natural” or “non-GMO” – labels that are often misleading and not regulated.

Herbal medicine should be of top quality and come from wildcrafted sources to provide the highest chemical vitality to the body for healing.

One of my favorite stores for buying organic herbs in bulk is Starwest Botanicals. Not only are all the herbs they sell organic, but they also have a trusted reputation of being one of the oldest organic herb producers in the US. They are also devoted to the best herbal and environmental practices and even have in-house testing labs to verify the highest quality and purity of the products. That’s why I decided to become their affiliate partner and help spread their awesomeness to others!

*Starwest Botanicals is my affiliate partner, and any purchases made through the link above will not come at any additional costs to you but a proceed of it will help support my small business. Thank you!

Final Thoughts

If you feel stuck in life or creativity and need the help of herbs to stimulate the creative energy flow in the sacral chakra, calendula, damiana, and raspberry leaf are some of the most potent herbs to improve the reproductive system function, whose vitality is reflected in our creative potential.

By using these three herbs for creativity as well as other orange-colored herbs, foods, and spices, you can ignite a greater creative reservoir that comes more effortlessly with passion, joy, and playfulness. In case your mind is blocking your creative powers, try to silence it for a bit and let the intuitive body take the driver’s seat. From there, let what comes take over without judgment.
